Three Things You Need to Know Before Switching to LEDs

August 15, 2021

Are you still using standard incandescent light bulbs? If so, it might be time to make the switch to LED lights. There are several reasons why LED lighting conversion may be a good idea for your home or business.

Here are some things to know before you make the switch to LEDs.

LEDs will save you money

One of the strongest reasons to undergo LED light conversion is that the switch to LED lights will save you money. But wait, aren’t LED bulbs more expensive? It is true that LED bulbs are generally more pricey than incandescent bulbs, but they also last much longer and use far less electricity. The end result is that you will save a lot of money over time by switching to LED lighting.

Incandescent bulbs will last an average of two years before they suddenly burn out and leave you in the dark. In contrast, an LED bulb will often last up to 20 years or more. And instead of burning out all of a sudden, they usually will get dimmer over time. It’s like getting an advance notice that you will need a new bulb in the near future, which is a bit more considerate than randomly going kaput, don’t you think?

In addition to lasting longer, LED bulbs use a whole lot less energy than incandescent bulbs. In fact, they usually use 70 to 90 percent less energy, saving you between $30 and $80 over the lifespan of the bulb.

LEDs are more efficient

LED lighting turns 95 percent of the energy used to power them into light, compared with incandescent bulbs that only convert 10 percent of that same energy into light (the rest is wasted as heat, which is why these bulbs are too hot to touch when they’re on or just after they’ve been turned off). The fact that LEDs can produce just as much light as an incandescent bulb with far less energy means they are more efficient.

LEDs are versatile

One of the coolest things about LED lighting is its versatility. They can often be found in different colors or even with remote controls that can change the color of the light at the touch of a button. Some LED lights even have features that allow them to be controlled with an app from your smartphone.

In addition to fun colors like green, blue and red, LED lighting has a range of color temperatures that you can customize for each room. For example, a natural-white or cool-white color is a great choice for ambient lighting in a kitchen, while daylight-color temperature bulbs can be a good choice for a bedside reading lamp or a home office.
